my favorite curly hair products & tips

Jan. 26, 2024

Hey, friends!

Around a year and a half ago now, I started working on taking better care of my hair. Since my hair is curly, one of the main things I had to do was try different products and see what worked best! For today’s post, I’m going to be sharing my favorite products and tips for caring for curly hair!

aussie miracle curl milk

I use this stuff pretty much every day and it is the most essential part of my curl routine. All you do is apply it to wet hair, add something to prevent frizz & hold your curls, scrunch, and you’re good to go for the day!

not your mothers curl talk frizz control

This is the only product out of the 4-5 I’ve tried that actually works to keep your hair from being frizzy (if you have curly hair, you know how hard it is to keep it from becoming frizz!) that doesn’t make my hair feel heavy or crunchy. This and the curl milk I mentioned above are definitely my two favorite and most used products.

herbal essences curl definer shampoo & conditioner

This is the shampoo and conditioner I use to wash my hair every week. It makes your hair so soft, smells amazing, and it’s way better for your hair than normal shampoo.

maui moisture nourish & moisture conditioner

I usually use this after I’ve been swimming because nothing dries your hair out like chlorine. It works amazingly well to moisturize my hair without making it feel weighed down or too heavy to curl.

herbal essences curl refresh mist

Finding a curl refresh mist that didn’t make my hair crunch was one of the hardest things to find when I was looking for curly hair products. I tried the Herbal Essences was since I liked other products and it works really well if you don’t have time to do your whole curl routine or your curls just need a quick refresh.

aussie miracle curl defining oil

I love to put this in my hair before I braid it with some of the Not Your Mothers Frizz Control. It makes my hair look so pretty when I take it out and keeps my curls in for so much longer than it would without it.

andrew fritz simons fantasy curls mask

I think I’ve talked about this hair mask on here before, but it’s one of my favorites when I want to do a hair mask. It makes my hair so soft and feels amazing.

products i don’t recommend

Garnier Fructis Curl Shampoo/Conditioner (the shampoo/conditioner made my hair so heavy that it was hardly curling) TRESemme Flawless Curl Mousse (this caused so much frizz), Aussie Miracle Curl Refresher (my hair literally crunched when I used this), Aussie Miracle Frizz Taming Cream (didn’t do anything to help with the frizz and made my hair feel nasty).

This is just a list of a few products I’ve tried and didn’t like but when it comes down to it, you have to use what’s best for you and your hair type!

curly hair tips

  1. If you shower before bed, add product & braid your hair. Technically, I know you’re not supposed to sleep with wet hair but I do it all the time since I usually shower at night. Braiding it and adding product is what I usually do and my curls are so pretty when I take my braids out.
  2. Pineapples work, if you do them right. When I originally tried doing a pineapple to keep my curls overnight, I’d take my hair out in the morning and it would be knotted and take so long to get it looking nice again. This video gives a great explanation of how to do it and make it actually work!
  3. Use a silk pillowcase. My grandma gave me these for Christmas, and I’ve noticed such a huge change since I started using them. Usually, I’d go to bed with my hair looking nice and then I’d wake up with awful frizz and have to wash it which if you have as much hair as me, it takes so long for it to dry. But using silk pillowcases does help my hair so much and keeps it in about the same condition as it was when I went to bed!

now, it’s your turn!

I hope this post helped and gave you so many new things to try if you have curly hair! Comment below and let me know if you’d like to see another hair tip post or if your favorite hair products!

Great tips and product recs! I have wavy/curly hair so I might have to refer back to this post when I’m shopping later. 🙂 I honestly don’t use many products but it’s nice to have a curl defining mist or gel for extra-fancy hairstyles.
Also I was literally just working on a beauty recs post for tomorrow, haha!

Yes! All these tips were so good. I personally use a super moisturizing scalp refreshing shampoo that also helps with my itchy scalp. The brand is bhs. and it works fantastically. I also use OGX beauty’s Locking+Coconut curls air dry cream. It’s the only thing that didn’t make my hair feels like I’d gelled it.

Ah yes, I too am a curly girl and it has taken me ages to find something that works for my hair. I like Shea Moistures curl butter, it’s not too heavy and makes a good cast on my curls. Unlike you, I like a bit of crunch because once I shake out the curls they last for days.
    Great post Pearl!

Thank you for these great tips! Looking forward to trying out some of these products—I have some trouble with keeping my curls looking nice for more than two days or so, and they get REALLY frizzy XD
One question: can you buy all these on Amazon, or where would you recommend purchasing them?

    Great tips!

Very intrigued by the Aussie brand products – I’m Australian and I’ve never see them here! I wonder what makes them “Aussie”.

My hair isn’t very curly, but I would like to find some good hair products, any suggestions? It’s so hard to find products that don’t make your hair crunchy! I also can’t handle very strong scents (they give me headaches) so that makes it even harder to find good products…

hmm, they probably won’t work the best unless your hair isn’t really curly/wavy. i’d recommend any of not your mother’s, ogx, or herbal essences products- i know my sister (who doesn’t have curly hair) likes all of those!

This is an amazing resource! My hair is super curly and now I really want to try out some of these products! Thanks for sharing (:
I use the Fructis Garnier (I think that’s the brand?) anti frizz serum on occasion, but I’d like to try out something specifically for curly hair.
I would love to read another post like this if you did one!

We’ve only used a few things before. It makes the underside curl more XD. The top refuses.
