autumn pen-paling inspo

Sep. 27, 2022

Hello, my friends!

I’ve been pen-paling for a few years now, and now I have quite a few consistent pen pals to that I love to write letters to. I love writing and decorating seasonal letters and today, I thought I’d share some of my favorite things to do for autumn-themed letters! Sounds fun?

Let’s dive in!

fall-themed goodies to include

I always enjoy sending extras and goodies with my letters to my penpals, almost like little gifts but a bit more simple.

  • tea

I love receiving and sending tea, but especially in the fall when it’s chilly and cozy tea is part of the season.

  • fall color palettes

This is one of my favorite things! Send your pen pal an autumn color palette or “paint card.” Divide a strip of paper into several sections with narrow washi tape and fill in each block with a color you see outside. I used watercolor pencils, but you can use any art medium you like. Peel off the tape, label the colors, and you’re good to go!

  • Bible verse cards

These work for any time of year! I love sending (and receiving) verse cards to my penpals. You can get a set of premade ones, or write and doodle your own.

  • dried leaves

I love collecting leaves and drying them, and sending them to a pen pal is a lot of fun. If you dry them, either glue them or use modge-podge to attach them to a piece of paper (it’s especially pretty if you do a background first! I watercolored this one with fall colors.), and then use clear mailing tape to protect it.

  • fall washi tape samples

This is a lot like the color palettes but simpler. Cut out a strip of paper, and pick out any washi tape that you have that gives you fall vibes. Tape it to the paper. You get a really pretty and neat strip of paper. I love sticking these up on my bulletin board, putting them in my art journal, etcetera.

  • fall photo prints

If you have any pretty and cute fall photos, I love getting cheap prints of them and putting them in letters. It adds a nice pop of color and they’re very fun to receive.

  • stickers

Stickers are cheap to buy and can be really cute and useful – I got a large pack of these adorable owl stickers a while ago at a craft shop for a good price and I love sending them to my penpals.

  • a wax seal kit

This isn’t necessarily something you’d send to a pen pal, but it is helpful if you write a lot of letters. I got this one off Amazon a bit ago and it’s amazing to use, plus adds a fancy touch when you seal the envelope.

fall themed questions

My letters are always full of different questions and I love asking and answering them. So, here is a list of my favorite autumn-themed questions. . .

  • What’s your favorite thing about fall?
  • What’s your least favorite thing?
  • Do you have a favorite fall scent?
  • Do you have any fun fall traditions?
  • What’s your favorite fall color?
  • What’s your favorite fall drink?
  • Where’s your favorite place to go in the fall?
  • Pumpkin pie or apple pie?
  • Carve pumpkins or paint pumpkins?
  • What do you imagine when you think of a fall?

what do you think?

And there we have it! I hope you enjoyed this post. Before you go, I’d love to have you answer these questions in the comments. Do you have a pen pal? What was your favorite idea from this post? Would you enjoy more pen-paling posts in the future?

Thank you so much for reading and please have a lovely day!

Oh also, I have a question: what kind of paper do you like to use for your letters? Do you just use notebook paper or printer paper? Or do you have special stationery for it?

So glad you enjoyed it!! I’ll definitely do more, then. I usually use normal notebook paper (I sometimes watercolor the edges, or add washi tape to make it look prettier!), but I do have some stationary for special occasions. A lot of time it just depends on what mood I’m in. 😀

Love the tea idea! My main pen pal lives in Canada, so it’s hard to send food or things like tea, but I love sending things like washi tape samples, and it’s so cool that you have a wax seal kit!

Oh, that makes things difficult, but it’s great that you can send other small things. And yes! I love my wax seal kit – and yay! I’ll definitely make more posts in the future.
